Moez and Marissa Kassam, deeply appreciative of the opportunities they've found in Canada, have made a transformative $300,000 donation to bring the acclaimed APPLE Schools health initiative to Ontario. This significant contribution reflects their unwavering commitment to creating a society where all children, regardless of their background, have the chance to thrive.

APPLE Schools, championed by Dr. Katerina Maximova at St. Michael's Hospital's MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions, has already made a profound impact on over 100,000 children in Western Canada. Through a focus on healthy eating, physical activity, and mental well-being, the initiative empowers children in disadvantaged communities to build lifelong habits that reduce their risk of chronic diseases.

"Their visionary support is invaluable as we work together to tackle the inequities vulnerable youth face," said Dr. Maximova, who shares a similar immigrant background with the Kassams and deeply appreciates their understanding of the challenges faced by many young people.

The Kassam's gift will enable APPLE Schools to expand its reach, bringing its proven model of success to schools across the GTA and Ontario.

We spoke with Moez Kassam, founder of Anson Funds and co-chair of the Moez & Marissa Kassam Foundation, to learn more about the motivation behind this generous donation and the couple's unwavering commitment to building a brighter future for all.

Q. What inspired you to invest in APPLE Schools?

A. We were incredibly impressed by the results Dr. Maximova and her team have achieved. Seeing the positive impact APPLE Schools has had on over 100,000 children, we knew we wanted to be part of bringing that success to our community. In the investment world, we're always looking for opportunities with a proven track record and the potential for significant returns. APPLE Schools is exactly that—a solid investment in the future of our children. By providing additional funding, we hope to amplify their impact and help even more kids thrive.

Q. How does your background motivate you to make a difference?

A. Marissa and I both deeply value the opportunities we've found in Canada. Our success wouldn't have been possible without the support we received along the way.

Now, it's our turn to pay it forward. We believe in using our resources and experience to create a more level playing field. Just as we carefully analyze investments to maximize returns, we apply the same diligence to our philanthropic efforts. We want to ensure our contributions have a real and lasting impact on the lives of others.

Q. What drew you to St. Michael's Hospital's work and mission?

A. St. Michael's is a cornerstone of our city. It embodies the spirit of Toronto—diverse, resilient, and always striving to provide care for those who need it most.

Their commitment to serving vulnerable populations resonates deeply with us. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. Supporting St. Michael's is an investment in the health and well-being of our entire community.
