State-of-the-art new CT scanner now up and running, thanks to you

St. Michael’s Hospital is now home to a state-of-the-art new CT scanner thanks to the incredible generosity of our donor community.

Last year, we shared the exciting news that St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation had transferred critical funds in support of the hospital’s highest-priority needs—including replacing one of three aging CT machines. 

That item was crossed off the list this past January with the arrival of the GE Revolution Apex CT scanner, bringing the latest in diagnostic imaging to patients and clinicians across St. Mike’s. 

“This is the highest technology currently available,” says Jeff Kerk, Director of Medical Imaging. “It’s like going from one of those little digital cameras you used to carry on vacation to an iPhone 17 Pro Max.” 

A top-of-the-line system that will significantly enhance the hospital’s ability to manage imaging needs in high-volume areas like cardiac, trauma, and stroke, the new CT scanner is a powerful diagnostic tool that reflects the world-class care our teams deliver.

Capable of imaging an entire brain or heart in 0.23 seconds, or a single rotation, the machine is faster, more efficient, and more reliable, with significantly less time required for maintenance. More than 650 patients were scanned in the first month alone. 

Lisa Evans, Manager of Medical Imaging at St. Michael’s, says the machine offers a range of advanced capabilities that benefit clinicians and patients alike. 

“The Apex processes images much faster, allowing clinicians to view scans and make critical decisions sooner—a huge benefit when every moment counts,” she says. “And with the ability to support image-guided biopsies, it’s building our capacity for these procedures and positively impacting patient care."

In addition to the new CT scanner, the hospital is also working on modernizing its entire imaging system and rolling out a new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system with the support of last year’s $10.6 million transfer of unrestricted dollars.
