Across the board, Canadians say* they want to receive the best treatment for their medical condition and reasonable wait times. They also want to feel safe, comfortable, listened to, respected and reassured during their health-care experience. So we’re taking action to deliver that, and more. That means one-stop care, with the entire health team in one place. It means reduced wait times. It means spaces that comfort and heal. It means equitable care, so everyone, including those experiencing disadvantage, receives the treatment that they deserve.

An architectural wonder, the new BARLO MS Centre gives us the chance to do what was once unimaginable: catapult MS research to a whole new sphere of progress and break the back of a disease that has proven intractable.
We’ve done it. We’ve unsiloed medicine. We’ve opened the Schroeder BRAIN&HEART Centre. It’s different, and it makes sense: after all, what happens in the brain impacts the heart – and vice versa. Now our trailblazers are breaking new ground in remote robotic surgery.
St. Michael’s is Canada’s premier critical care hospital — and home to two of the world’s top specialists in mechanical ventilation. Now they are about to save even more lives by customizing ventilation treatment for each patient.
With one of the highest trauma survival rates in North America, St. Michael’s takes on the most complex trauma cases. Now we’re building the trauma system of the future with complete care on one floor.
We’re on the frontlines of the battle against cancer, with almost one-quarter of clinical care devoted to treating cancer patients. Now we’re set to build a world-class Centre for Oncology, with bigger facilities and the latest genomics-based diagnostic technology so we can deliver the personalized care our patients deserve.
At Providence Healthcare, we’re building a new facility with units that feel like home, and where culturally diverse menus, activities and social events create a close-knit community. It’s all part of a one-stop Campus of Care, where residents can lead healthy, connected lives.
We’re mobilizing a global movement to rethink health-care design and delivery, grounded always in the patient’s point of view. We’re building 11 research and innovation centres like the Centre for Food As Medicine, the Centre for Substance Use and Mental Health, and the Centre for Healthy Aging.
State-of-the-art facilities are essential, but they’re not enough. The best hospital spaces are designed with the human experience in mind. Comforting and uplifting spaces that welcome families, promote privacy and shorten recovery times.
Every hour, another Canadian is diagnosed with brain cancer. Getting a cancer diagnosis can take weeks in pathology, and it might not even be accurate. That means patients wait around anxiously to find out whether they have cancer – and just how serious it is. And treatment decisions are delayed.
St. Michael’s Dr. Howard Ginsberg, a neurosurgeon and biomedical engineer, is teaming up with biochemist Dr. Arash Zarrine-Afsar to develop a rapid tumour diagnostic system. It’s a hand-held laser with a chemical analyzer that identifies the molecular fingerprint of a tumour instantaneously. It tells surgeons in 10 seconds whether the tumour is in fact cancer, and if so, exactly what type it is – so they can deliver faster, more precise treatment.
